Nostalgia: Primus makes me think of high school

When I was a freshman in high school, I used to get a ride to school from some Mormon girls who drove a Chevette and loved Primus. They didn’t have a stereo, just the shittiest boombox in the world. So we used to listen to “Sailing the Seas of Cheese” over and over again. It’s a really good album, man. Primus–El Sobrante, represent!*

Will CGI kill stop motion? I hope not. They’re different things entirely.

Fish On (Live 2003)

This is my favorite Primus song, and one of my favorite songs of all time. I can and do listen to it at any time. Perhaps because it’s so easy to get lost in each of the instruments. Cerebral listener, me. It also makes me envious of people who play instruments and well.

* El Sobrante is a place out here, a suburb, that is somewhat unique in its mixture of people: rednecks, gangsters, cholos, Primus, people with roosters and goats and ponies, some middle class folks, and Miss Silver Squid’s family. It’s a weird place. A cowboy sports bar next to a check cashing spot next to a feed store next to a Jack in the Box. All in the Yay Area, right next to Richmond. Weird. Motorcycles and low riders and trailer hitches. I think I’ve made myself clear. Oh, but everybody loves Raymond, and by Raymond, I mean methamphetamine. It’s the common denominator.
